The Port of Tarragona

The city and the Port of Tarragona is firmly committed to welcoming cruise ships and passengers. One of the strategic guidelines set out by the Port Authority of Tarragona is to become a regular destination for cruise tourism. To that extent, the efforts of the Port of Tarragona have focused on promoting the Port of Tarragona as an alternative to other ports that are more consolidated in this type of tourism and gaining support from all territorial administrations. The Port of Tarragona is a leading port in the Mediterranean with a volume of freight around 35 million tonnes a year and diversified traffic. Currently one of its priorities is to develop cruise tourism and to that extent it aims to provide excellent services and optimal quality to meet the needs of cruise lines.

Security

Both the port and the APT staff are committed to protecting health and human life, as well as the facilities and the environment. That is why all the components of the APT aim at maintaining general safety and reducing risks.

With this objective, various plans have been implemented to ensure maximum security both in the port area as well as surrounding areas. Existing plans include the Plan of Port Security to prevent anti-social acts and the Interior Emergency Plan (PEI), intended for emergencies occurring in the harbour and neighbouring areas.

In addition, each pier is covered by a protection of port facilities plan, supervised by a port security officer for each of the different springs. Likewise, an access control system (ISIS System) has been developed, and today the port is also a cardio-protected space.

To ensure safety in the port area, there is a control centre that monitors operations under the requirements of the organic law on data protection. Port security is always coordinated with the other regional security forces and the State.

Disabled access

The Port of Tarragona has a fully accessible passenger terminal adapted to meet the needs of all visitors:

  • The waiting area is located on the ground floor with a ramp providing direct access from the street.
  • Restroom equipped and adapted for use by disabled visitors.
  • All passageways comply with that established in the Catalan decree of accessibility for adapted and accessible routes.

Environment

The port uses an environmental management system certified in conformity with environmental regulation ISO 14001.

Furthermore, it has operated as a pilot port, obtaining results that are then transferred to the entire national port system in:

  • Water quality: elaboration and verification of ROM 5.1 – 13 (in collaboration with the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics of the University of Cantabria)
  • Air quality (in collaboration with the National Committee for Scientific Research within the HADA European project)

It is currently a pilot port in the elaboration of a waste management guide and energy efficiency guide. In addition to compliance with MARPOL, it has a selective waste recovery service for recycling.

A best practices guide has been elaborated for solid bulk, improving air quality and decreasing the number of particles with adverse health effects.

The port has technical staff and equipment to take action according to protection plans against marine contamination.

The Port of Tarragona is part of the Voluntary Agreement programme to reduce greenhouse gases and has obtained the Guarantee Distinction in Environmental Quality in the category of Vehicle Fleets aimed at improving the environmental impact of the Port Authority of Tarragona beyond the obligations established by regulations in force.

There is a special awareness towards biodiversity in the port sector which is reflected by the monitoring of the extraordinary event that took place in the port in 2013: the nesting and breeding of Audouin’s gulls, an internationally protected migratory species.

In 2014, ISO 50001 in energy efficiency was implemented.
